The First Nail on Prop 8’s Coffin

Today’s decision by Judge Vaughn R. Walker of the U.S. District Court of Northern California is the first step towards legal equality for all people in decisions that couples should have complete control over. I have opposed Proposition 8 from the beginning and I am supportive of what same-sex couples want to do with their lives, even marry. Who are we to say which people should marry? Granted there should be age limits, but who are we to say who could marry or not? Rights for all should never be voted on. This is not a popularity contest, this is about full protection and equality under the law.

Just because Walker overturned this awful proposition, doesn’t mean it’s over. I’m sure it will go all the way to the Supreme Court. For now, this is the first nail on Proposition 8’s coffin. I would have a lot to say about this, but Keith Olbermann has summed my opinions on this issue exactly, which he expressed a few days after Proposition 8 was approved:
